We aim at WCAG 2.1 Level AA. This page says what that means here, where we are confident, and where we are not — because a claim of compliance with no detail behind it is not much use to anyone.
Colour and contrast
- Body text is deep clay brown on cream, measured at 14.6:1 — far above the 4.5:1 the standard asks for.
- Secondary text is 6.16:1. Headings and links in morning glaze are 8.56:1 on the page background.
- The primary button is white on morning glaze at 9.47:1, which passes Level AAA rather than AA.
- The kiln red used for heat-related accents is 5.34:1 on cream and is safe for text, but it is never the only way anything is communicated.
- Nothing is signalled by colour alone. Warnings carry an icon, a heading and a border as well as a tint. Chart lines are distinguished by dash pattern as well as hue, and every chart is duplicated as a table.
Charts have tables
Every cooling curve on this site is published with an equivalent data table giving the temperature at each time point. The table is not hidden behind a toggle and is not screen-reader-only — it sits next to the chart and is read by everyone. A line a screen reader cannot follow is a decoration, not a measurement.
Measurements are text
No specification is conveyed by an icon or a diagram alone. Capacity, rim diameter, handle opening, wall thickness, weight, height, microwave and dishwasher suitability are all written out in words and figures, in a definition list a screen reader reads as label-and-value pairs.
Keyboard
- Everything interactive can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone.
- Focus is always visible — a three-pixel outline in morning glaze, never removed anywhere in the stylesheet.
- A “Skip to content” link is the first thing in the tab order on every page.
- Product photographs swap to the hold shot on focus as well as hover, so a keyboard user sees the same picture as a mouse user. That shot is the one that shows how the handle sits in a hand, so it is not an optional extra.
- The cookie banner does not trap focus and can be dismissed without a mouse.
Structure and screen readers
- One h1 per page, and headings that descend in order.
- Landmarks throughout: header, navigation, main and footer, with labelled navigation regions.
- Every form field has a real label, errors are tied to their field with aria-describedby, and invalid fields are marked with aria-invalid rather than only turning red.
- The basket count is announced as words as well as shown as a number badge.
- Decorative images carry empty alt text; photographs that carry information describe what they show.
Zoom, reflow and motion
- The layout reflows to a single column on narrow screens and at 400% zoom, with no horizontal scrolling. The measurement row stays with its card when the grid collapses — it is the part people came for.
- Text can be resized to 200% without anything being clipped or overlapping.
- The site respects prefers-reduced-motion. With it on, the cooling curve appears already drawn instead of animating, and no transition runs.
- The hero video is silent, loops, and is decorative — nothing is only communicated by it.
Where we are weaker
- The hero’s leader lines and callout chips are drawn over the photograph on large screens. They are hidden from assistive technology and the same four numbers appear as a text list, but the visual arrangement is dense and may be hard to read at very high zoom.
- The comparison table on the cooling page is wide. It scrolls sideways inside its own container on small screens rather than reflowing, which is workable but not elegant.
- We have tested with VoiceOver on macOS and iOS and with keyboard-only navigation. We have not yet tested with JAWS or NVDA on Windows, and we will not claim we have.
