One cup, every day
Daycup is a shop that sells one thing: cups you drink out of. Not tableware, not homeware, not a lifestyle. Forty-two cups and three things that look after them.
The idea came from a complaint we kept hearing about ceramics bought online: the photographs were beautiful and the cup was wrong. Too heavy when full. A handle that caught a knuckle. Half a centimetre too tall for the dishwasher basket. None of those are visible in a picture, and none of them are usually published.
So we publish them. Every cup here carries eleven measurements, four of which sit on the front of the page: how much it holds, how wide the rim is, how much clear space your fingers get inside the handle, and how thick the wall is. Then a twelfth number, measured rather than estimated — how warm the water still is after ten minutes.
It is not a romantic way to sell pottery. It is the way you would choose a cup if you could pick it up first.
How it is made
Designed here, made there
The range is designed in Denmark and produced by two workshops, one in Poland and one in Portugal. We say which on every product page. Where a cup was designed and where it was manufactured are two separate claims, and only the first of them is ours to make — so we never merge them into a single country label for the range.
We are equally careful about the word handmade. Some pieces are thrown by hand on a wheel, one at a time, and the throwing rings are visible on them. Others are cast in a mould and then trimmed, handled and glazed by hand. A few are machine-pressed and hand glazed. All three are honest ways to make a cup; only the first is hand-forming, and each product page says which one applies.
We sell our own line. We do not resell other studios’ work and we do not act as an agent for individual ceramicists.
What we will not say
The claims we refuse to make
That any of these cups keeps a drink hot
Ceramic has no vacuum layer. A thicker wall cools more slowly than a thin one, and that is the whole of the effect — none of these cups keep a drink hot the way a vacuum flask does. We publish a cooling figure so you can compare our cups against each other, and we publish the method and its limits alongside it. There is one double-walled cup in the range and even that one is described as cooling more slowly, not as insulated.
That ceramic cannot break, or survives a temperature shock
It is neither. Boiling water into a cold cup can crack it, and a dropped cup breaks. We say so on every product page rather than in a footnote.
That a cup does anything to what is in it
No health claim, no taste claim, no water claim. A cup holds a drink.
That variation is a flaw, or that flawlessness is achievable
Hand-finished pieces vary by up to ±5% and glazes differ between firings. We state the tolerance rather than pretending it does not exist.
These are not good intentions. The phrasing we are not permitted to use is held as a list in the source code and checked automatically before every deployment — a build containing any of it fails and never reaches this site.
Boundaries
What this shop is not
We sell cups only — things you drink out of, plus a small number of items that look after them. No plates, no bowls for food, no serving dishes, no vases, no ornaments.
Every drinking vessel here is a food contact article and is sold with a supplier Declaration of Compliance on file.
Coasters, brushes and cloths are not food contact articles and are labelled as such on their product pages.
We sell our own product line. We do not resell other studios' work and we do not act as an agent for individual ceramicists.
We are a retailer of consumer tableware. We do not offer engraving, personalisation or any made-to-order service, which is why every item here carries the full 14-day right of withdrawal.
